What started as my Plan B has become Plan A
Sep 04, 2025
When my husband Ollie and I decided to leave Vietnam, we were both hoping to land positions at the same international school.
We were thrilled to interview at schools in Greece, Malta, The Netherlands and Japan!
But...the school that we were ultimately successful with only had one opening in the primary, as they are still building their DP program.
Initially, I felt disappointed.
But because I'd been building a portfolio career over the past few years, it gave me options for multiple income streams, even if I didn't have a teaching job.
Instead of seeing this as a setback, I was able to pivot quickly.
The consulting work I've been doing on the side can scale up. The freelance projects I've been dabbling with have become more valuable. The network I've built across different countries and industries are opening doors I hadn't considered before.
While Ollie settles into his new role, I have the flexibility to take on different projects that are really exciting!
I'm working with an education company on their global expansion strategy, writing resumes with Jobclub, and expanding my career coaching offer for a start. Then there's also my YouTube and e-commerce projects which are more long term income generating targets.
I love how it's working out so far. I have the variety and autonomy that energises me!
What started as my Plan B has become Plan A. Sometimes the path that seems like a detour is actually the scenic route to exactly where you're meant to be.
Portfolio careers are becoming the new normal for lots of people across loads of different industries... do you know someone who's doing this as well?
P.S. I love that portfolio careers also give me the time flexibility to walk my dog every morning... she is loving the park in Kyoto!
