A portfolio career means choices
Sep 08, 2025
The reason I am passionate about portfolio careers (especially for women) is that it gives you choices.
I've had loads of jobs since I started working at 15 years old, and sadly I've had lots of negative experiences where I felt that I had to accept or stay in a role because I had no other options at the time.
Some things I've experienced at work include:
- sexual harassment
- having my workload doubled but pay remained the same
- offered entry level salary despite having a masters degree and experience
- declined one off request for flexibility after working over and above role requirements consistently
and there's a lot more that I could go on with!
Building a portfolio career, and multiple incomes streams, means that:
- I don't have to accept that job with low pay
- I don't have to accept that job with inflexible hours
- I don't have to stay in that job when they double my workload (and not my pay)
- I can quit immediately if I am being harassed
A portfolio career mean choices.
And that's feminism right there.
